Melanie Del Vechio – Principal

Melanie Del Vechio brings more than 25 years of experience in education and a deep love for serving students and families. She holds a master’s degree in principalship, endorsements in reading and early childhood education, and has completed the National Institute for School Leadership program. After proudly serving as Assistant Principal this year, Melanie is excited to step into the role of Principal. During her time as Assistant Principal at AMS Avondale, she has built meaningful relationships with students, families, and staff and feels truly grateful for the trust and connections formed within the school community. Throughout her career as a teacher, instructional leader, and Director of Curriculum and Instruction, Melanie has focused on helping both teachers and students reach their full potential. She successfully led a campus from a D rating to a B rating in one year by strengthening instructional systems, using data with purpose, and supporting teachers through intentional professional development. Outside of school, Melanie is a proud mother of two sons. She was born in California and loves to travel, explore new places, and create lasting memories with her family. Those experiences shape her belief in lifelong learning and the importance of broadening perspectives. Melanie believes that a strong school is built on relationships, high expectations, and a shared commitment to growth. She is passionate about literacy, academic excellence, and creating a warm, supportive environment where every child feels seen, valued, and inspired to succeed. She looks forward to continuing to partner with families and working together to help every student thrive. |
Courtney Johnson – Assistant Principal

With years of experience at the Academy of Math and Science Ms. Johnson is excited to help all scholars reach their full potential. She looks forward to continuing the traditions and work that make Academy of Math and Science a special place for all scholars to learn and grow socially and academically. Ms. Johnson has been in education for over ten years and began her career as a teacher, teaching grades K-6th both primary and intermediate grades. Courtney’s skills, knowledge, and professionalism are in alignment with our organization’s goals. Ms. Johnson is a native of Phoenix and has taught at several schools in the valley. She received her bachelor’s degree in communications and her master’s degree in educational leadership at Northern Arizona University. Her biggest accomplishment is being a mother to her daughter. As an experienced educator, she understands the importance of a positive school culture which is created by building strong relationships with all stakeholders. She looks forward to collaborating with all of you to ensure the social, emotional, and academic needs of ALL students attending at Academy of Math and Science. |
Amanda Rincon - Assistant Principal

Amanda Rincon started in the world of education earning her Bachelor's degree in Elementary and Special Education and Master's in Educational Leadership. With her knowledge she has applied her learning in the classroom, teaching in First, Second, and Fourth grade. From there she moved into Educational Outreach then went into a leadership role as an Early Childhood Director.
She is excited to join the Mambas family with AMS because of its strong commitment to academic excellence, character development, and community involvement. What draws her to this school is its challenging curriculum, passionate educators, and the supportive environment that encourages students to grow not just as learners, but as individual scholars. As a visible and engaged leader, she is known to be consistent, approachable, and solution-oriented, always prioritizing the well-being and success of both students and staff. She works collaboratively to uphold high academic and behavioral expectations, while also fostering a positive and inclusive school culture.
She loves reading and binge-watching the next dramatic reality show. Outside of academics, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, watching her two boys play sports, exploring new places with her husband, and is always up for a well-planned adventure. Coming from a large, close-knit family that values education, hard work, and kindness, she has always been supported in pursuing her goals. As a first-generation college graduate, she strives to give her best in everything she does. She enjoys deep conversations, telling jokes, and making people feel welcome. Whether through a shared interest or a good laugh, she always seeks to find common ground with those she meets.
